It must be marching season again..........

The month of March brings out two very different forms of Marching season in Ireland and on this side of the pond! We Irish-Americans know only the happiness and revelry that is St. Patrick's Day month with the various parades, performances and parties.....

Gerry Adams' Fundraising Visa Denied Again by US Administration

The U.S. Special Envoy, Ambassador Mitchell Reiss, has barred Gerry Adams once again from attending a fundraising event unless the party endorses the PSNI [Police Service of Northern Ireland]. This time it is a Friends of Sinn Féin breakfast at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. on the morning of March 16th.

The move by the US Administration is all the more galling and mystifying at this time as policing reform remains the subject of delicate negotiations with the British government, expected to introduce legislation devolving policing and justice to elected officials in the north of Ireland. Something Sinn Fein has been lobbying for.

The IRA moves over the past months in standing down as a military force and totally decommissioning its arms seems to have stimulated the US Administration to punish Sinn Fein.

The IMC [Independent Monitoring Commission], which is neither independent nor monitors anything - it is told what to report by the PSNI , just happens to be visiting the U.S.

Meanwhile, the DUP [Democratic Unionist Party] is opening a US office. There are no plans to ban Ian Paisley from fundraising. The DUP will be rewarded for its tireless efforts to wreck the GFA [Good Friday Agreement] and return to the unacceptable, bloody past.

We must send a powerful message to Ambassador Reiss, the National Security Council, and whoever else is responsible in the U.S. Administration by telling the Bush Administration know we will not tolerate this discriminatory treatment of Irish officials.

Famine Church Can Be Destroyed

St. Brigid’s Church in Manhattan’s Lower East Side , which was a refugee for Famine Irish immigrants and has a prominent role in New York immigrant life, is being sold by the Catholic Church to developers after a court ruled that the church can be demolished and replaced with luxury apartments. Efforts to save the church are far from over. "We’re going to keep fighting. This beautiful building could be an Irish center, an Irish museum or an immigration museum. I've been thinking about the Irish languge. It's a great and beautiful language but its also difficult. Its not too hard to read, it's slightly more difficult to listen to (especially if you are a beginner) but why is it so difficult to write?

What makes it so difficult to put English into Irish? Does it get any easier as you go?

We visited alot of Ireland while we were there. Bhí Éirinn go hálainn... I really loved it. We went to Newgrange and Blarney Castle. I got to stay in the Purcell Castle (below) . I collected holy water for my Uncle in a Holy Well. It was just so beautiful and green.

More about the Celt Classic

We saw several great bands at the Celt Classic. One was called Baka Beyond, they were a blend of Irish and African music, a very interesting mixture. The other was the Barley Boys, they were wonderful! They had a great rendition of Star of the County Down. We did alot of walking around and drinking too.

Táim ag léamh an leabhar Across the Baricades le Joan Lingard. Is leabhar maith é. Its about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, set int he 70s. It gives a good insight into both the Catholic and Protestant mind-set at the time. Is seanleabhar é. I borrowed it at my library.

This man claims to be a fluent Irish speaker who studied in the Gaeltacht, in reality he was trained by my teacher in PA. He's a liar so if you are looking to take Irish classes in PA beware of him.

The Celt Classic is a great time and if you have any interest in that type of thing I recommend that you go.
